What Is a Hair System?

A hair system — sometimes called a hairpiece or toupee — is a non-surgical hair replacement solution designed to cover areas of hair loss on the scalp. It consists of a base made from lace, polyurethane, or a combination of materials, onto which real human hair strands are carefully hand-tied or injected.

At McGuire's, we work exclusively with human hair systems, customized to each client's scalp, color, texture, and lifestyle.

The Components

The Base The base is the foundation everything is built on. At McGuire's we offer three base types:

  • Lace — the most breathable option, great for active clients or hot Texas weather
  • Skin (Polyurethane) — durable and easy to clean, with an incredibly natural hairline
  • Hybrid — combining the breathability of lace with the durability of poly. It holds up especially well in Austin's hot and humid climate.

The Hair Every system we use is made with real human hair, hand-crafted strand by strand. Systems may occasionally include yak hair in areas of high grey percentage, as it closely mimics human hair texture.

The Attachment We attach systems using either strip tape or liquid adhesive, depending on your scalp type, lifestyle, and how you plan to maintain your system at home. Both methods are safe, skin-friendly, and effective — we'll help you figure out which is right for you during your consultation.

Who Is a Hair System For?

Hair systems are a great fit for men experiencing:

  • Androgenetic Alopecia — the most common form of pattern baldness
  • Alopecia Areata — patchy hair loss from autoimmune conditions
  • Medical Hair Loss — resulting from chemotherapy, radiation, or other treatments

If you're unsure whether a hair system is right for your situation, a consultation is the best place to start. We'll be honest with you about what to expect.

What to Expect Day-to-Day

Wearing a hair system is a lifestyle — not a one-time fix. You'll need to remove, clean, and reattach your system anywhere from every one to four weeks depending on your adhesive method and body chemistry. Many of our clients learn to do this at home on their own, which saves time and money in the long run.

Regular maintenance keeps your system looking natural and extends its life. Most of our preferred systems last between 3–6 months with proper care.

The Bottom Line

Modern hair systems have come a long way. When properly fitted, cut, and styled, there is genuinely no way to tell you're wearing one. It's immediate, it's painless, and it works — which is why so many of our clients say they wish they'd found this solution sooner.
